الكتاب (ماهية علوم الحديث والاتجاهات النقدية المعاصرة) لمؤلفه الباحث الفذّ الدكتور حمزة البكري؛ بضبط ماهيّة علوم الحديث، وذلك بتحديد تعريف هذا العلم، وتحديد موضوعه، وتعيين غايته، ويناقش الأقوال الواردة في هذه المبادئ، كما يهتمُّ بالبحث في أسماء هذا العلم ومناقشتها من جهة صِلَتِها بماهيّته. ويُسلِّط الضوء كذلك على الهيكل النظريّ لعلوم الحديث، ويقف وقفةً جادّة عند مراتبه وأقسامه، لتأصيلها من جهة، وللكشف عن موضع كتب مصطلح الحديث فيها من جهة أخرى.
ثم ينطلق من هذه النظرة الكلّيّة إلى علوم الحديث للبحث في الإشكاليّة المعاصرة في تصوُّر علاقة هذا العلم وكتبه بالنقد الحديثيّ، حيث ظهرت هذه الإشكالية بوضوح في هذا العصر؛ فمنهم مَنْ ظنّ كفاية مصطلح الحديث في النقد فاقتصر عليه، ومنهم مَنْ رأى عدم كفايته فيه فانتقد علم المصطلح وكتبه، ومنهم مَنْ تصوَّر مراتب هذا العلم بدقّة، وتفهّم موضع علم المصطلح منها، فتفهّم وظيفة كتبه وغايتها، ولم يُبالِغ في شأنها إيجاباً بالاقتصار عليها، أو سلباً بانتقادها والاعتراض عليها.
وقد عرض المؤلف للاتجاهات النقدية المعاصرة في علوم الحديث، متمثلةً في أعيان المشتغلين بهذا الفنّ، كالكوثري والمعلمي والألباني وحمزة المليباري، غيرَ متعرِّضٍ لأشخاصهم ولا لتوجهاتهم الفكرية، إنما دارسًا لاتجاهاتهم الحديثية وآرائهم النقدية، بتجرُّد وموضوعية. وقد خلصت الدراسة إلى نتائج جديرة بالاهتمام البالغ عند المشتغلين بهذا العلم.
