هذا الكتاب متن فقهي قليل المباني، كثير المعاني، هو من أهم المتون المختصرة في الفقه المالكي لما يحتوي على الأقوال المعتمدة في المذهب، وضعه إمام كبير وصف بأنه أوحد زمانه في الفنون النقلية والعقلية، سالكاً سبيل مختصر الشيخ خليل، متجنباً ما في ذلك من الاقوال غير المعتمدة.
وقد عرف فقهاء المالكية المتأخرون لهذا المتن أهميته، وعوّلوا عليه كثيراً في مؤلفاتهم، ووضعوا عليها شروحاً وحواشي لطيفة، وكان عمدة أصيلة لطلبة الفقه المالكيّ إلى اليوم،
فكثرت لذلك طبعاته التي لم يحظ فيها بالعناية المطلوبة، فتكرّرت فيها الأخطاء والتصحيفات التي ربما بلغت إلى حد إخراج الكلام عن مراده الصحيح؛ مما أوجب أن تجيء هذه الطبعة متحرية تصحيح تلك الأخطاء، مع بذم كل ما يقرب مادة هذا الكتاب إلى قارئيه، ويسهل إغتراف مائه العذب على وارديه.
