متن فقهي قليل المباني، كثير المعاني، هو من أهم المتون المختصرة في الفقه المالكي لِـما يحتوي على الأقوال المعتمدة في المذهب، وضَعه إمام كبير وُصف بأنه أوحد زمانه في الفنون النقلية والعقلية، سالكاً فيه سبيل مختصر الشيخ خليل، متجنباً ما في ذاك من الأقوال غير المعتمدة. وقد عرف فقهاء المالكية المتأخرون لهذا المتن أهميته، وعوّلوا عليه كثيراً في مؤلفاتهم، ووضعوا عليه شروحاً وحواشيَ لطيفة، وكانَ عمدةً أصيلة لطلبة الفقه المالكيّ إلى اليوم، فكثُرت لذلك طبعاتُه التي لم يحظ فيها بالعناية المطلوبة، فتكرّرت فيها الأخطاء والتصحيفات التي ربما بلغت إلى حدِّ إخراج الكلام عن مراده الصحيح؛ مما أوجب أن تجيء هذا الطبعة متحرّيةً تصحيحَ تلك الأخطاء، مع بذل كل ما يُقرِّب مادة هذا الكتاب إلى قارئيه، ويُسهّل اغترافَ مائه العذب على وارديه.
