يقول نيتشه: "الذكرى نقش على ضريح العاطفة"، وبطل رواية (الذاكرة رحلة في العدم) للكاتبة "نجلاء عواد" نقش ذاكرته على ضريح العاطفة أيضاً؛ يقف على حافة الذاكرة يبحث عن حلقة مفقودة من وجوده. فقد جزء من ذاكرته على أثر حادث سير، فوقف خائفاً من سطوة المستقبل الذي ينتظره. هو "عدن" المهندس الميكانيكي الذي بلغ الثالثة والعشرين عاماً والذي توقف الزمن عنده في سن السابعة عشر عاماً، وذلك بعدما أفاق من غيبوبةٍ دامت مدتها خمسة شهور. ليجد نفسه في مستشفىً يتلقى العلاج اللازم .. سوف تخبره العائلة الكثير عن حياة لم يعد يتذكرها، عن مواهبه، وعن أصدقائه. وعن أخواته، تلك متزوجة، وتلك تدرس بالخارج.. سوف يقرأ مذكرات بين هو/وهي، يبحث عن صاحبة حرف الراء، ويسأل كيف التقيا ولماذا افترقا؟ وشعور يلاحقه بأنه ليس لديه ماضٍ ولا مستقبل، عاجزاً عن إبداء أي رأي. يتفكر في الوجود يبحث عن علاقة الذاكرة بالروح والنفس والعاطفة. وبعد رحلة طويلة مع المرض وجد الأطباء أن في الولوج إلى حياته العاطفية طريقاً للعلاج، ليكشف السرد أن ما بداخله أكبر من الصدمة وأن جسده يرفض تذكر أحداث معينة من حياته، وأن هناك صدمة عاطفية وراء عدم التذكر على اعتبار أن الذاكرة مرتبطة بالحياة العاطفية للإنسان... فهل يكون فقدان الذاكرة والتصالح مع الحياة هو الحل؟
تقول الكاتبة نجلاء عواد: "قد نعيش شهوراً على لحظة نتمنى إعادتها، نستمر بتذكر تلك اللحظة، وعندما يذهب بريقها وتصبح مثل النهر الذي جف، تشاهد أرضه وتعلم أنه بزمن ما كانت هناك حياة، ولكنك لا تستطيع فعل شيء ماء النهر لا يعود نفسه. والنجمة التي تسقط لا تعود. مثل كل شيء يحدث لمرة، مثل الشباب ومثل الموت، تلك اللحظة لن تأتي. لا شيء يتكرر، لا أحد يعيش وفق ما يريد، ومن عاش لحظة كما كانت داخله، سيكفيه التغني بها، ولن يأمل حتى بتكرارها، لأنه يعلم جيداً أنه كان حلماً، وكان كثيراً لأن يحصل فكيف بتكراره؟ إنه المستحيل".
