هذه هي الترجمة العربية الأولى لكتاب «المقالات» للفيلسوف الفرنسيّ الكبير مشيل دو مونتيني (1533 - 1592م)، من عصر النهضة الأوروبية. وفيه أوَّل ظهورٍ لفنِّ المقالة في تاريخ الأدب. ظلَّ هذا الكتاب على قوائم الفاتيكان للكُتب المحظورة زهاءَ ثلاثةِ قرونٍ، لكنَّ حظرَه لم يكبحْه عن الذيوع في أوروبا، والتأثير في كبار مفكريها، مِن عصر التنوير حتى العصر الحديث، وفي صدارتهم: فرنسيس بيكون، ووليام شكسبير، ورينيه ديكارت، وبليز باسكال، وجون لوك، ومونتسكيو، وفولتير، وديفيد هيوم، وجون جاك روسو، وديدرو، وكانط، وجوته، وإمرسون، وفريدريش نيتشه. هؤلاء العظماء وغيرُهم الكثير مِمَّن هُم في طبقتهم، جميعهم دانوا لهذا الكتاب بالفضل في أدبهم وفلسفتهم؛ بعضهم -مثل مونتسكيو- احتفظَ بنسخة نفيسة منه في خزانته حتى وفاته، والآخر -مثل نيتشه- دأب على قراءته طوال مدة حياته..
