اتخاذُ الرهائنِ ظاهرةٌ قديمةٌ ليستْ في الأندلسِ فحسبْ، ولكنْ في دولٍ وحضاراتٍ أخرى قديمةٍ كما تؤكدها الدلائلُ التاريخية ، فإنَّ ظاهرةَ أخذِ الرهائنِ نظامٌ فريدٌ أَمْلتهُ الظروفُ السياسيةَ حيثُ تَمَيَّزَ هذاَ النظامُ بوسائلهِ المتعددةِ، ومقاصدهِ وغاياتهِ التي تتلخصُ في تثبيتِ النظامِ وفرضِ الولاءِ، والدافعُ إلى اتخاذ الرهائنِ ليس فقطْ فرضُ السيطرةِ السياسيةِ، ولكنْ أيضا فرضُ الزعامةِ الروحيةِ مِنْ خلالِ حملِ المناهضينَ والخارجينَ والثوارِ على الانضواءِ تحت رايةِ الحكومةِ القائمةِ.
