علي بهجت: أَحدُ عُلماءِ التاريخِ والآثارِ الشرقيةِ والإسلاميةِ في القرنِ العِشْرين، وهو تُركيُّ الأَصْل، ويَعودُ إليه الفَضلُ في استخراجِ آثارِ الفُسطاطِ بالقاهِرة.
وُلِدَ «علي بهجت بن محمود بن علي أغا» في قريةِ «بلها العجوز» التابعةِ لمَدِينةِ «بني سويف» بمِصْرَ عامَ ١٨٥٨م. تلقَّى تعليمَه بالمَدْرسةِ «الناصِرية»، ثُمَّ المَدْرسةِ «التَّجهِيزية» في القاهِرة، وبعدَ أنْ أتمَّ دراستَه الْتَحقَ بمَدْرسةِ الأَلسُنِ عامَ ١٨٨٢م. وقد كانَ مُلِمًّا بالعديدِ مِنَ اللُّغاتِ إلى جانبِ لُغَتِه العَربية؛ حيثُ أجادَ الفَرَنسية، والأَلْمانية، والتُّرْكية، وكذلك الإِنْجليزية. قامَ بالعديدِ مِنَ الرِّحلاتِ إلى أُوروبا؛ الْتَقى فيها بالعديدِ من علماءِ الآثارِ المُهتمِّينَ بالشَّرق.
شغَلَ العديدَ مِنَ الوَظائِف؛ كانَ أولُها وَظِيفةَ مُعيدٍ بقسمِ اللغةِ العربيةِ في المَعهدِ الفَرَنسيِّ للآثارِ الشَّرقية، كما تَولَّى رِئاسةَ قلمِ الترجمةِ بوِزارةِ المَعارِف، ثُمَّ عمِلَ مساعِدًا لأمينِ دارِ الآثارِ العَربية، فأمينًا لَها، ثُمَّ تَولَّى إدارتَها، وبذَلِك يَكونُ هُو أوَّلَ مِصْريٍّ يَتولَّى مَنْصبًا إداريًّا مَرْموقًا كانَ مَقْصورًا وقتَذاكَ عَلى الأَجانِب، كَما اختِيرَ عُضْوًا في المَجْمَعِ العِلميِّ المِصْريِّ عامَ ١٩٠٠م؛ حيثُ ألقَى فيه الكثيرَ مِنَ المُحاضَراتِ العِلْمية.
صنَّفَ «علي بهجت» العديدَ مِنَ الكُتبِ التارِيخيةِ الهامَّة، نَذْكرُ مِنها: «الأَمْكِنة والبِقاع»، و«أَطْلال الفُسطاط»، هذا فضْلًا عن كُتبِه المُترجَمةِ عَنِ الفَرَنسية، ومِنْها: «تارِيخ جامِعِ السُّلطانِ حَسَن»، و«فِهْرست مُقتنياتِ دارِ الآثارِ العَربية»، و«القَوْلُ التامُّ في التعليمِ العام».
تُوفِّيَ بحيِّ «المَطرية» بالقاهِرة عامَ ١٩٢٤م، عَن عُمرٍ ناهَزَ السادِسةَ والسِّتينَ.
