لما من الله علينا بقراءة شيخنا العلامة والبحر الفهامة مربي الطالبين ومحيي سنة سيد المرسلين الشيخ الدسوقي [متن الكافي في علمي العروض والقوافي] ثم بقراءته شرح شيخ الإسلام زكريا الأنصاري على متن الخزرجية في هذين العلمين، وكنت إذ ذاك أقيد علي هذين الكتابين ما تيسر من تقريره، أردت أن أجمعه في أوراق خوف الضياع وأجعله تقريرًا على متن الكافي، وضممت إليه ما يحتاجه الحال من شرح العلامة الشيخ الصبان على منظومته في هذين العلمين ومن شرح الدماميني على الخزرجية ومن شرحي العيني والأسنوي على منظومة ابن الحاجب، في العروض والقوافي، ومن شرحي العلامة الشيخ العمري والشيخ السجاعي على هذا المتن، ومن حاشية العلامة الشيخ الحفني على شرح شيخ الإسلام، على الخزرجية، ومن حاشية العلامة الصبان، على الأشموني في بعض أبيات وغيرها، ومن غير ذلك كما يعلم ذلك الواقف على هذه الكتب وقد صرحت بالعزو لأصحابها في بعض المواضع كما ستراه.
