ما دام الإنسان يتطلع إلى وجود غاية أو الوصول إلى هدف فهو معتقد بالطبع، والاعتقاد وليد التطلع، والتطلع وليد التأمل، حيث لا يمكن أن يقال أن التأمل ناشئ دون أساس، فالتأمل لا يمكن نشوؤه إلا عن معتقد أو لأجل اعتناق معتقد، فقد يبدأ الإنسان مقلدًا أبويه دون إدراك لحقائق الأمور والمعتقدات التي يسيران عليها، غير أنه حين يشب ويتأمل في حقائق الوجود، يظهر له التأمل ما خفي عليه إن كان من أولي الألباب، فتتولد عنده الرغبة في البحث عن أدلة الإثبات والنفي، فإذا اعتراه شك في كنه شيء مما يعتقده, وقام صراع خفي أو ظاهر بين عقله وعقيدته، فإنه يبدأ استعراض المبادئ التي يقوم عليها اعتقاده ابتغاء إيجاد نتائج يؤيدها اليقين.
