عرف حاتم بصفات سماها رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم مكارم الأخلاق فحاتم محب لقومه قائم بأمرهم موكل بقضاء حاجاتهم فما ترك شيئا محمودا إلا أتاه وما رأى أمرا معيبا إلا تحاشاه فطر على حب الخير واجتناب الشر. وقد تعدت مكانة حاتم حدود قومه، وشاع صيته خارج مضاربهم فالكرم الذي كان لصيقا به ما هو إلا اجتماع خلال سامية، وتنزيه عما يضع من منزلته؛ لأنه مقرون بنبيل الفعال. وقد جاء هذا الديوان الذي صنعه ابن الكلبي موثقا لأخباره وآثاره، إلى جانب أشعاره التي تشيع فيها روح إسلامية خالصة، من جود وعفة وصدق وعدل، لأن هذه الصفات تتوافر للرجل السوي سليم الفطرة.
