تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى تأكيد دور الجغرافي وقدرته على دراسة مشكلات المدينة نتيجة نموها العمراني المتزايد. إذ تعد دراسة استخدام الأرض بمنطقة ما جزءاً لا يتجزأ من دراسة التركيب الداخلي للمدينة، وهي الوظيفة التي تشغلها الأماكن المختلفة في المدينة (أحمد علي إسماعيل، 1988م، ص 281)، كما أن لها أهمية خاصة في المجالات التخطيطية لما تقدمه من عمليات مسح وتحليل لأنماط استخدام الأرض والأنشطة المرتبطة بها، ووضع حلول للمشكلات التي تعاني منها ومن ثم يتحقق الجانب التطبيقي أو النفعي للدراسة (محمد إبراهيم رمضان، 2003م، ص 57). لذا تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى تأسيس منهجية في تصنيف وتحديث خرائط استخدامات الأرض لمدينة حلوان باستخدام تقنيتي الاستشعار عن بعد ونظم المعلومات الجغرافية، وبناء قاعدة معلومات مرنة تساعد في التخطيط السليم لمدينة حلوان لتقابل الاحتياجات الناتجة عن الزيادة السكانية والتوسع العمراني
