ستانفورد؛ حيث أعمل زميلًا أول بكرسيكارول جي سايمون. وقد ساعَدَ في ظهوره أيضًا زمالةٌ بحثية في مؤسسة كارل فريدريش فون سيمنز في ميونيخ بألمانيا، امتدت طوال الأشهر الستة الأولى من عام ٢٠٠٩ بدعوة من صديق عمري د. هاينريش ماير. ويجب ألا أنسىفي هذا المقام توجيهَ الشكر لجامعة هارفرد على كرمها الذي تبديه لي دائمًا؛ فهي المكان الذي قضيت فيه معظم حياتي في واقع الأمر. وأنا ممتنٌّ أيضًا لكاثرين سينسن لنقدها القيِّم والموضوعي للكتاب، الذي قدَّمتْه لي باحترام شديد. وقد كانت زوجتي الراحلة ديلبا وينثروب، التي كان من المفترضأن تشاركني تأليفَ هذا الكتاب، في خاطري طوال الوقت وأنا أخطُّ هذا الكتاب.
