كان ألكسي دي توكفيل من أوائل الذين أدركو عظمة المشروع الأمريكي ونادوا به من غير الأمريكيين, وفي رائعته "الديموقراطية في أمريكا" التي نشرت في جزأين عام 1835 لم يقدم فقط وصفًا دقيقًا للدولة التي كانت آنذاك دولة جديدة، وإنما تنبأ بما ستصير إليه تلك الدولة. وترجع مكانة توكفيل الراسخة في التاريخ الأمريكي إلى بصيرته النافذة وأفكاره السياسية التي بقيت عبر الزمن، ويعد تأريخه لنشأة أمريكا جزءًا ثابتًا في أي منهج دراسي يتناول التاريخ الأمريكي- من تأثير الطائفة الإنجيلية حتى ظهور "المجتمع الاستهلاكي" ومن العجيب أنها تحققت وفقًا للبرنامج الزمني الذي حدده.
ومع ذلك فلم يكن لدى توكفيل في عصره أدلة كافية تثبت صحة أفكاره، وكان يفتقر إلى مقومات شخصية المفكر بعيد النظر، إذ كان منطويًا على نفسه ومعتل الصحة وميالًا إلى التشكك في قدراته الخاصة. ويبرهن جوزيف إبستاين- أبرع كتاب المقالات الأمريكيين- على أنه أقدر من يكتب عن سلفه، فهو يعرض المآثر الفكرية لتوكفيل بأسلوب رائع طريف، ويلقي الضوء على مراحل نموه الفكري، ثم يستعرض نبوءاته المختلفة (لم يكن سجل توكفيل يتسم بالكمال، فقد كان يظن أن الحكومة الفيدرالية سوف تئول إلى الزوال عندما تزداد سلطة الولايات)، وهذا الكتاب يرسم صورة إنسانية لهذا الرجل الفرنسي الذي صار رمزًا أمريكيًا.
