ترجع بذور الغلو في الدين إلى رؤوس الثوار على عثمان رضي الله عنه، وبعض العجم والأعراب الذين لم يتفقهوا في الدين، وبعض العباد الجهلة الأوائل، وأصحاب الأهواء، وأهل النفاق والزندقة، وكان من ضحيتهم بعض الغيورين والمندفعين إلى التدين بعاطفتهم بلا حكمة، ومن هذه الأصناف تكونت فرق الخوارج الأولى.وأصول الغلو باقية، وتنبعث كلما توافرت أسبابها في أي زمان وأي مكان وبيئة، لا سيما مع الأحداث الجسام والفتن، فنزعة الغلو والتشدد التي قد تنشأ عنها ظواهر التكفير والعنف قد تصاحب كل نهضة أو دعوة وتشذ عنها.
