عَرَفَ الإنسانُ العقيدةَ منذ بَدْء الخليقة، كما عرف وعَلِمَ مفردات العالَم من حوله، وشَرَعَتْ هذه العقيدة في الارتقاء مثلما ارتقى كلُّ ما حوله، فكانَتْ تحمل من البداءة والبساطة ما حملت حياته الأولى. و«العقاد» هنا يناقش نشأةَ العقيدة الإلهية، منذ خُلِق الإنسان وعَرف له ربًّا إلى أن اهتدى لقداسة التوحيد. وبدأ العقاد كتابه بأصل الاعتقاد، ثم جاء بعقائد أقدم الحضارات التي عرفَتْها البشرية، ثم أردفها بعقائد مَن آمنوا بالكتب السماوية، وكذلك تأثير الأديان والفلسفة كلٍّ منهما في الأخرى، ومذاهب الفلاسفة التابعين والمعاصرين في ذلك. ولمَّا كان الكِتاب يرمي إلى العقيدة الإلهية دون غيرها، لم يتطرَّق إلى تفصيل شعائر الأديان؛ لِمَا لهذا الموضوع من فروعٍ تضيق هذه الصفحاتُ عن حَصْرها.
