يقول وليم بلوم في مقدمة كتابه هذا \قتل الأمل\ أنه وفي العام 1993 اتفق له أن قرأ مراجعة كتاب يتحدث عن أناس ينكرون أن المحرقة النازية حدثت فعلاً. كتب أثرها رسالة إلى مؤلفة الكتاب، وهي أستاذة جامعية، لإبلاغها أن كتابها جعله يتساءل عما إذا كانت تعلم عن حدوث محرقة أمريكية وأن إنكار حدوث هذه المحرقة الأمريكية واسع النطاق وعميق الفور إلى حد أن منكريها لا يعلمون بوجود المدّعين أو بادعائهم، مع ذلك فإن بضعة ملايين من الناس قد لاقوا حتفهم في المحرقة الأمريكية وملايين عديدة أخرى من الناس كان مصيرهم أن يحيوا حياة بؤس وعذاب نتيجة للتدخلات الأمريكية التي امتدت من الصين واليونان في أربعينيات القرن العشرين إلى أفغانستان والعراق في التسعينات من القرن نفسه، وقام بلوم بإرفاق رسالته هذه بقائمة تلك التدخلات التي بطبيعة الحال موضوع هذا الكتاب وفي هذا يقول أنه وفي مطلع الخمسينات
