قد شهد العصر المملوكي في مصر والشام 648- 923هــ ظهور الكثير من المؤرخين الذين ألفوا في العديد من فروع الكتابة التاريخية، ويعد القرن التاسع الهجري بمثابة العصر الذهبي للتدوين التاريخي في مصر، إذ برز فيه كبار المؤرخين من أمثال القلقشندي (ت 821هـ)، وتقي الدين المقريزي (845هـ)، وابن حجر العسقلاني (852هـ)، وابن تغري بردي (ت 874هـ) وشمس الدين السخاوي (ت 902هـ) ولكل من هؤلاء مساهمات قيمة في التاريخ. لكن التأليف في سير الحكام خلال هذه الحقبة شكل أمراً لافتاً، فعلى الرغم من أن هذا الحقل التاريخي ظهر قبل العصر المملوكي بقرون، إلا أنه مثل نقطة تحول أضرت بالسمعة العملية لبعض لمؤرخي هذا العصر الذين صنفوا فيه، إذ أن عدداً منهم قفز على أهم شروط الكتابة التاريخية المتمثل في الحيادية وعدم التحيز والتمسك بالأمانة العلمية، وراحوا يدونون لبعض السلاطين المعاصرين لهم سجايا وصفات وإنجازات لا وجود لمعظمها على أرض الواقع، وهو أمر نجد له تفسيراً في محاولة هؤلاء المؤرخين التزلف للسلطة القائمة بغية الحصول على مكاسب دنيوية، وهناك من اشترك مع أقطاب السلطة بمشتركات أساسية أو مذهبية، وخير من يمثل هذا الإتجاه السلبي هو المؤرخ بدر الدين العيني (ت 855هـ)، فهو على الرغم من مكان بعض مؤلفاته التاريخية الأخرى، ومنها كتابه التاريخي الكبير (عقد الجمان في تاريخ أهل الزمان)، إلا أنه أضر بمكانته كمؤرخ من خلال عدد من المؤلفات التي كرسها لتسجيل أخبار ملفقة ومعلومات لا يقبلها العقل ولا المنطق خصت بعض السلاطين المماليك الذين عاصرهم، وسنتناول بالدراسة والنقد والتحقيق أحد مؤلفاته في هذا المجال، ألا وهو كتاب (الروض الزاهر في سير الملك الظاهر ططر)، فالكتاب ومن خلال التمعن في العنوان الذي اختاره المؤلف منحاز بالكامل لصالح السلطان المملوكي الظاهر ططر (ت 824هـ)، وسنحاول من خلال نقد النصوص الواردة فيه وتحليلها أن نبين أن هذا المؤرخ جانب الصواب وتجاوز الشروط الواجب الإلتزام بها عند المؤرخين.
