إن الإمام العلامة المحدث الفقيه المؤرخ الشيخ محمود بن أحمد المعروف بالبدر العيني المتوفى سنة 855هـ عن ثلاث وتسعين سنة من علماء مصر الأفذاذ المكثرين من التأليف في العربية والفقه والحديث والتاريخ وسائر العلوم؛ فشرحه على الهداية من أمتع شروحها، وشرحه على صحيح البخاري من أوسع ما كتب في شرح هذا الكتاب، وشرحه على معاني الآثار للطحاوي من أحسن ما ألف في أحاديث الأحكام، وتاريخه الكبير المسمى (عقد الجمان في تاريخ الزمان) من أفيد ما برز للوجود في التاريخ العام من تراجم وأنباء وهو في أربعة وعشرين مجلدًا وتاريخه الأوسط في ثمانية مجلدات، وتاريخه الصغير في مجلدين، ومختصره لتاريخ دمشق لابن عساكر في عشرة مجلدات، وشواهده الكبرى لا يستغني عنها باحث في شواهد العربية، وله فضل عظيم في تاريخ مصر حيث سجل أنباء مصر في تاريخه الكبير، وكتب آثارًا خاصة في سير بعض ملوكها الذين عاصرهم كالظاهر وبرقوق والمؤيد شيخ والظاهر ططر والأشرف برسباي فأنار كثيرًا من نواحي حياتهم الشخصية والسياسية، وأربعتهم من الجراكسة فالسيف المهند في سيرة الملك المؤيد (شيخ) من محفوظات دار الكتب المصرية، والروض الزاهر في سيرة الملك الظاهر (ططر) مما صوره قسم الثقافة من الجامعة العربية في عداد الكتب المتخيرة التي صورها من شتى الأقطار.
