الكتاب عبارة عن رواية . وتدور أحداث الرواية حول أسماء التي تعيش في روسيا لإكمال الدراسات العليا، فتشعر بغربة في هذا البلد الثلجي، وتُصدم ابنة الجنوب ببرودة الجو حيث تصل درجة الحرارة 30 تحت الصفر، وأكثر في بعض الأيام. وفي غمرة انشغالاتها مع الطلبة ومع هذا الوضع الجديد، تعتريها حالة من الحنين إلى الوطن. مسترجعة في رحلة العودة، أخواتها الثلاثة، وعائلتها المكونة من أب قاسٍ، فكان اسما على مُسمى "جبار" يعتريها الهسيس والجبن من الأب المُتجبر والذي خرج ولم يعد يُعرف مصيره، فتَمَثَل في الابتعاد عن الوطن، ومحاولة محو ذاكرتها من الأهل والأقارب، وتكبدها رحلة نحو المجهول، فتحط في سماء وطن ثان، علّ الأيام فيه تداوي جراحاتها، متأملة في ماضيها وماضي عائلتها، بدءً من التنشئة الصعبة وما يتعلق بها من مآس وأحداث. وتعرضها في طفولتها إلى حوادث قاسية، تُختزن في نفسها، فالأم المغلوب على أمرها، تُضطر إلى الخدمة في البيوت لكسب لقمة العيش، والإنفاق على أسرتها الصغيرة. و"مريم"، الأخت الثانية، والتي أثرت بشكل أو آخر على حياة أختها أسماء، الفتاة العنيدة والمهووسة بالمشاغبة، والتي تتعرض لحادث كاد أن يودي بحياتها، أما لمى الأخت الصغرى فهذه وجدت في الحياة، ولكن ينعدم وجودها، فتكون نسيًا مّنسيًّا، حتى أن اسمها يُنسى في بعض الأحيان من قبل أختها أسماء. في الرواية متابعة وسبر حيوات أكثر من 41 شخصية، مختلفة معظمهما من الأهل والأقارب والصديقات، والأصدقاء. غربة رافقت "أسماء" وحاصرتها، فلم تستطع مواصلة دراستها، لتعود بخيبة جديدة، تسترجع عبر فصول عديدة، أسماء أشخاص كانوا السبب في هذا الشعور الذي ظل يداهمها حتى عند ابتعادها عن مكان ولادتها وصيرورتها.
