تنتمي هذه الدراسة إلى البحوث الوصفية وتم تحديد مشكلتها في التساؤل التالي "ما اتجاهات النخب الأكاديمية والإعلامية الليبية نحو شاهد العيان كإعلامي؟". وتكتسب أهميتها من حداثة الموضوع المتعلق بشاهد العيان في وسائل الإعلام، وندرة الدراسات حوله. وهدفت هذه الدراسة إلى تحديد الدور الذي يقوم به شاهد العيان في تشكيل وتوجيه الرأي العام وتعبئته وتحريكه بالتحريض والثورة لإسقاط الأنظمة السياسية في بلدان ما يعرف بالربيع العرب. عدة وتساؤلات الدراسة: هل يحل شاهد العيان مكان المراسل المحترف في تغطية الحروب والنزاعات؟ وهل مهنة الإعلام أصبحت عرضة للمتطفلين؟ هل ما يقوله شاهد العيان يوثر على معيار المصداقية في نشر أو إذاعة الأخبار؟ وإلى أي حد يمكن قبول شاهد العيان كمراسل صحفي يقوم بتغطية الأحداث؟ وهل يمكن الاستغناء عن الصحفي المحترف؟ وقد استخدمت هذه الدراسة منهج المسح الإعلامي عن طريق استخدام الاستبيان كأداة لجمع البيانات من عينة الدراسة التي تكونت من بعض أساتذة الجامعات الليبية والإعلاميين الليبيين العاملين في مختلف وسائل الإعلام الليبية. وقد توصلت الدراسة النتائج التالية: اتفق معظم أفراد عينة الدراسة على أن شاهد العيان هو إعلامي، وأظهرت أن شاهد العيان كان حيادياً في نقله لأحداث الثورات، وأن الاعتماد عليه في فترات الأزمات كان ضروريا لتغطية الأحداث من أماكن الحروب، كما اتفق معظم المبحوثين على أن شاهد العيان غير ملم بالتشريعات الإعلامية وبالتالي لا يمكن أن يكون شريكا أو أحد عناصر الإنتاج الإعلامي، كما لا يمكن الاستغناء عن الصحفي المحترف مهما كان الذي لعبه شاهد العيان في نقل احداث ما عرف بثورات الربيع العربي
