دخلت العربية السعودية إلى المعاصرة عبر بوابة البترول . كان البترول هو أساس التطور الهائل لاقتصادها وللتحولات الجذرية فى المجتمع ، ولتعاظم أهمية الدولة السعودية على ساحة العلاقات الدولية . على أن " المفتاح " الذى فتح هذه البوابة أمام تلك المملكة الصحراوية إلى المعاصَرة لم يكن سوى الغرب ، بالرغم من أننا لا يمكن أن نرجع كل التغيرات التى حدثت هناك إلى تأثيره وحده . ولهذا فقد اخترنا تأثير ونفوذ رأسمالية الدولة الاحتكارية الغربية على التطور الاجتماعى الاقتصادى للعربية السعودية ، موضوع هذا البحث ، بوصفه نموذجاً مميزاً للتفاعل بين الغرب ومجموعة دول الشرق فى الستينيات والسبعينيات .
