شاع استخدام هذا المفهوم في علم النفس والطب النفسي، حيث تم استعارته من الدراسات الهندسية والفيزيائية، حينما كان يشير إلى الإجهاد Strain((، والضغط )Press(، والعبء )Load(، واستعار علم النفس هذا المفهوم في بداية القرن العشرين عندما انفصل عن الفلسفة وأثبت استقلاليته كعلم له منهج خاص به، وأيضاً جرى استخدامه في الصحة النفسية والطب النفسي على يد )هانز سيلاي( الطبيب الكندي في العام )1956م( عندما درس أثر التغييرات الجسدية والانفعالية غير السارة الناتجة عن الضغط والإحباط والإجهاد، وفي مجال علم النفس تعددت الآراء حول تعريفه، ولهذا فإن اتجاهات العلماء في دراسة الضغوط انقسمت إلى ثلاثة اتجاهات
