الحقيقة أن الامام ابن تيمية نفسه ليس له قول صريح في هذا بل أقواله في الفتاوي أن الجنة والنار مخلوقتان باقيتان لا تفنيان، وأما الذي قال صراحة بفناء النار فهو الإمام ابن القيم تلميذ الشيخ ابن تيمية وقد كتب في هذا فصلاً مطولاً جداً في كتابه الفريد (حادي الأرواح إلى بلاد الأفراح) وقد استدل لقوله الذي رجحه هذا بأنه هو المنقول عن عامة الصحابة وجمهور التابعين، وأنه لا يذكر للصحابة قول مخالف وقد كتب أيضاً ابن أبي العز الحنفي رحمه الله في هذه المسألة فصلاً في شرح العقيدة الطحاوية بين فيه مذاهب المسلمين في هذه القضية حيث يقول: أما أبدية النار ودوامها، فللناس في ذلك ثمانية أقوال: أحدها: أن من دخلها لا يخرج منها أبد الآباد، وهذا قول الخوارج والمعتزلة
