يقدِّمُ لنا المستشرقُ الفرنسيُّ «كارا دو فو» بين دفَّتَي هذا الكتابِ دراسةً وافيةً حولَ سيرةِ حياةِ «ابن سينا» — أو «الشيخِ الرئيس» كما لُقِّبَ — أحدِ أهمِّ العلماءِ الموسوعيِّين في الحضارةِ الإسلاميةِ الذين بَرزُوا في القرنِ الخامسِ الهجري، والذين خُلِّدت أسماؤُهم وإسهاماتُهم وإبداعاتُهم الفريدةُ عبرَ الأزمان. يحدِّثُنا المؤلِّفُ عن نشأةِ «الرئيس»، ورحلتِه الطويلةِ التي خاضَها في طلبِ العلم، ونبوغِه في العديدِ من العلومِ والمَعارف، لا سِيما الفقهُ والأدبُ والفلسفةُ والطبُّ والرياضياتُ وغيرُها. وقد زخرتِ المكتبةُ العربيةُ بمؤلَّفاتِه النفيسةِ التي نُقِلت إلى العديدِ من اللغات، وكانت له تصوُّراتُه التي كانت مُغايِرةً في بعضِ الأحيانِ لأفكارِ علماءِ وفلاسفةِ عصرِه، وخاصةً فيما يتعلَّقُ بالنواحي النفسيةِ والطبيعيةِ والعقائدية، فضلًا عن بحوثِه واكتشافاتِه العلمية، التي لا تزالُ مَرجعًا مهمًّا ونبراسًا يُنيرُ عقولَ الكثيرينَ من المعاصِرين شرقًا وغربًا.
