ستطيع القارئ لهذا الكتاب أن يقوم بسياحة فكرية أثرية يتتبع فيها قدماء وادي النيل ، بصحبة أحمد نجیب مفتش وأمين الأثار، حيث واصل الأسفار واستطلع نصوص وكتابات ونقوش القدماء وراجع طوامير الآثار واقتفي منها الأخبار وقاسى الأخطار، وأشد ما أزعجه تعدي الجهلة على الآثار بالتخريب والدمار ونبش الأموات ، ولا يقبلون النصيحة ولا يخشون عار الفضيحة ، فهدموا الأبنية الشامخة وأتلفوا مبانيها الباذخة ونزعوا الفصوص وباعوها وشوّهوا النصوص ولم يراعوها ومدّوا أيديهم إلى الخانات الملوكية فصارت أصحابها مجهولة بالكلية كأنها لم تكن من بقايا أجدادهم أو بنيت في غير بلادهم .. وقد بحث المؤلف عن الأسباب ودخل البيت من الباب ،ولما اقتفى الأثر واستطلع الخبر علم أن هؤلاء القوم كأنهم في سنة من النوم لا يفرقون بين الرخيص والثمين ، ولا يعرفون فائدة العلوم وزعموا أن جميع مابقى من تلك الأزمان رجس من عمل الشيطان وقالوا ما فائدتها وقد بادت أربابها وذهبت أصحابها وتجردت عن الزينة والنقوش وصارت مأوى للوحوش وجهل الناس قدرها وأساسها .
