يقول المؤلف أنه سمت به رغبة في التاريخ إلى أوج التفتيش والتنقيب. وأودت به إلى مطايا الجهد إلى الإنكباب على البحث، فاقتضى أثر الكتاب المشهورين، وتمسك بعرى المؤرخين الصادقين، جامعاً من شتات ما أبقوه قلائد منظومة. وآخذاً عنهم شوارد وشواهد معلومة، وكاشفاً عن محيا الأعاجم والعرب القناع، منبهاً إلى ما لعبت به ألف الخرافات والأقاويل وغالته يد الضياع، واختصرت ما كان مسهباً، وأوجز ما كان مطنباً، فجاء كتابه هذا موفياً للغرض، وللمطالع كافياً وسماه "أساطير الأولين" في أخبار الماضين. بادئاً كل فصل من فصوله بلمحة تاريخية عن الأمم الأولية، ملحقاً ذلك بإيضاح المعتقدات الدينية، وذيلها بوجهات نظر وآراء تحيط اللثام عن الحقيقة. ملقياً الضوء على ما مر في الأحقاب منبهاً إلى الخطأ والصواب، وقام بأرداف ذلك ما يثبت الإقرار منذ القدم بوجود الله عزّ وجلّ رب العالمين بالحجج والبراهين مورداً معتقد الشعوب وآراء العلماء، وأقوال الفلاسفة القدماء والحكماء، دون أن يتماشى التكلم عن الكائنات، وكيفية المبدؤات ملحقاً إلى الرموز والخفيا التي جعلها الجهل وعصر الوثنية محقورة واهية.
وهي مأخوذة في الأصل عن مصادر معاصرة للمؤلف. وقد جاء ذلك ضمن فصول الكتاب السبعة وهي على التوالي: 1-في آسية مع الماع إلى خلقة الإنسان الأول وتسلسل البشر من بنية وسطوة سكان آسية ثم العرب وسيادة الدولة العلمية، 2-وفي الوثنية وحالة قومها وعباداتهم ومعتقداتهم وما كان عليه الفلاسفة والشعب الوثني. 3- في البابلين والآشوريين والماديين والفرس 4- في العرب 5- في اليونانيين 6- في الرومانيين 7- في العلة والمعلولات ومصدر الحكايات.
