يُعد علم النفس العسكري من العلوم التابعة لعلم النفس التطبيقي، ويهتم علم النفس العسكري بصورة خاصة بتطبيق أسس ومبادئ علم النفس في القوات المسلحة.. وذلك لأجل زيادة كفاءة أفراد القوات المسلحة من ضباط وجنود؛ ومن ثم توجيههم وفقًا لقدراتهم واستعداداتهم التي يتمتعون بها، ومن هنا نلاحظ بأن هنالك بعض الجيوش التي تستعين بالخبراء النفسيين ؛ من أجل دراسة الأفراد في القوات المسلحة، ثم وضع الرجل المناسب في المكان المناسب ويتم هذا الأمر استنادًا إلى اتجاهات الفرد النفسية وسماته الشخصية والانفعالية التي يتميز بها وكذلك قدراته العقلية والذهنية، وميوله واستعداداته وبناء على دراسة كل هذه الأبعاد يتم توجيه الفرد العسكري إلى نوعية السلاح الذي يتناسب مع قدراته ومقدراته التعاملية مع هذا السلاح.. كما يتم أيضًا من خلال هذه الدراسة استبعاد بعض الأفراد الذين لا تتناسب ميولهم النفسية وقدراتهم في الخدمة العسكرية، ويقوم الخبراء النفسيون في القوات المسلحة..
