لما كانت أمتنا كذلك فقد أفرزت لنا أفئدة أبنائها الشعراء كمًّا هائلاً من الدواوين الشعرية على مرِّ العصور منذ مولد الشعر الجاهلي قبل ظهور الإسلام بمائة وخمسين عامًا تقريبًا وحتى الآن. وللمنزلة السامية التي تحتلها العاطفة في الأعمال الأدبية فقد اهتم العرب بداية من العصر الجاهلي بفن الشعر اهتمامًا كبيرًا، ومما يعكس هذا الاهتمام ما كانت تفعله القبيلة العربية إزاء تفجر ينبوع الشعر على أسلة لسان أحد أبنائها، حيث كانت تقيم الأفراح، وتعد الولائم، وتأتي القبائل الأخرى لتبارك لها ميلاد شاعرها، ويؤكد لنا ذلك ما رواه "ابن رشيق" في كتابه العمدة 1/89 حيث قال:"كانت القبيلة من العرب إذا نبغ فيها شاعر أتت القبائل فهنأتها، وصنعت الأطعمة، واجتمع النساء يلعبن بالمزاهر، كما يصنعن في الأعراس، وتباشر الرجال والولدان؛ لأنه حماية لأعراضهم، وذب عن أحسابهم، وتخليد لمآثرهم، وإشادة بذكرهم. وكانوا لا يهنئون إلا بغلام يولد، أو فرس تنتج، أو شاعر ينبغ فيهم".
