يُعد الاهتمام بدراسة العلاقة بين الضغوط والأمراض النفسية والجسمية من الأمور المحورية في الطب النفسي المعاصر، وبذلت محاولات عديدة لقياس الضغوط والآثار الناتجة عنها بطرق كمية، وحتى الآن، تم قياس الضغوط في ثلاثة جوانب هي: مصادر الضغوط Stressors، ونمط الاستجابة للضغوط stress response types، والخصائص الفردية للمعرضين للضغوط individual characteristics وتشمل مواردهم الشخصية، ونمط سلوكهم، وأساليب التعامل مع أو مواجهة الضغوط، وتعد هذه الجوانب المتنوعة فى قياس الضغوط مهمة في كل من تخطيط العلاج، وتقييم آثاره. وتشمل الطرق المستخدمة لقياس الضغوط أساليب مثل المقابلة، والمقاييس الموضوعية، والملاحظة المباشرة، ولكل طريقة من هذه الطرق مميزاتها الخاصة وقيودها أو حدودها، وعلى الرغم من انتقادات الموجهة لأساليب التقييم الذاتي كانت ومازالت الطريقة الرئيسية لقياس الضغوط .
