منذ بضعة عقود، تساءل المفكر والأديب المصري مصطفى محمود: هل هو عصر الجنون؛ وذلك في كُتيِّبٍ شهيرٍ حمل نفس العنوان. واليوم يبدو جليًّا كونه كذلك؛ عصر جنون هذه الحضارة، وتآكُلها من داخلها بفعل شراهتها الجنونيَّة. عصر «السوپرماركت»، أو الاستهلاكية العالمية (بالإنكليزيَّة: غلوبال كونسيُمرِزم Global Consumerism)؛ وذلك حسب التعبير الذي شاع استخدامه في أدبيَّات اليسار الجديد. لكني أظن لقب: «السوپرماركت»، أو السوق (أو السوء؛ كما ينطقها عوام المصريين!) أكثر دقة وتفسيريَّة. إذ إن سمة عصرنا الغالبة هي تقويم الأمور كلها بحسب قيمتها البيعية، وتعيين مدى صلاحيتها وفقًا لإمكانيَّة خضوعها لعمليَّة التبادُل النقدي. إنَّهُ عصرٌ يُعيِّنُ سعرًا لكُلِّ شيء، ولا يعرفُ قيمة لأي شيء!.
