عام 1862، ولد عمر بن المختار بن فرحات من عائلة غيث التي تنتمي لقبيلة بريدان إحدي بطون قبيلة المنفه.امتاز بذكاء متوقد وبحضور البديهة، وكان مثقفًا واسع الاطلاع، عاش فقيرًا طيلة أيام حياته. ومنذ عام 1922 إلي أن تم القبض عليه أسيرًا في 11/9/1931.يستعرض الكتاب مدعومًا بالوثائق والصور الفوتوغرافية، تفاصيل المسرح السياسي الإقليمي والدولي الذي أحاط بالمشهد الليبي، إبان الاحتلال الإيطالي.ويستعرض الكتاب وقائع معركة «عين لافو» بالجبل الأخضر حيث وقع عمر مختار في الأسر صباح يوم الجمعة 11/9/1931، وتآمر قادة الاحتلال الإيطالي لإجراء محاكمة سريعة له والحكم عليه بالإعدام وتنفيذه في مشهد عام، وهو ما تم فعلاً في صباح يوم الأربعاء 16/9/1931 بحضور 20 ألف مواطن ليبي.
