غرس هذا الكتاب دراسة الأسس التي يقوم عليها بناء الرواية. ومن الواضح أنه لا يمكن حصر تلك الأسس في مثال لرواية واحدة مهما يكن شأنها. وعلى ذلك فسوف أتبع المنهاج التالي: سأقسم للرواية إلى أقسام أولية ولكن يسهل التعرف عليها، ولن أعني بنوع واحد من البناء فحسب، بل بعدة أنواع، وسأكشف، إذا تيسر ذلك، عن القوانين التي تعمل في كل منها، وأجد المبرر الجمالي لتلك القوانين. ثم سأحاول أن أبين أن هذه القوانين في كل مظاهرها تنبع من ض رورة عامة وتستهدي مبدأ عاما
