كان المتقدمون يعدون الكتب الأصول خمسة: الصحيحين وسنن أبي داود، والترمذي، والنسائي، ثم ألحق بها سنن ابن ماجه لما فيه من الفقه وحسن الترتيب، ولما فيه من الزوائد على الكتب الخمسة الأصول، واستقر الأمر على ذلك في كتب الأطراف والرجال. ومن العلماء من جعل سادس الأصول الستة: موطأ الإمام مالك لقوة أحاديثه، بينما يرى ابن حجر أن الأولى بذلك سنن الدارمي لقلة الرجال الضعفاء فيه ولندرة الأحاديث الشاذة والمنكرة.
