لا يرمي هذا الكتاب إلى أن يكون إضافة إلى الركام الهائل من الدراسات السياسية حول موضوع الإرهاب. لكنه يحاول، بدلاً من ذلك، أن يضع فكرة الإرهاب ضمن سياق أكثر أصالة كما آمل، سياق يمكن أن يُسمى على نحو فضفاض “ميتافيزيقياً”. وإذا كان الأمر كذلك،فهو ينتمي إلى النطاق الميتافيزيقي أو اللاهوتي (أو الدائرة الكاملة) الذي يبدو أن عملي قد اندرج فيه طيلة الأعوام الأخيرة، الأمر الذي رحّب به البعض، ونظر إليه البعض الآخر بخوف أو سخط.1 وفيما يتعلق بالسخط، عليَّ أن أقول لأصدقائي في صفوف اليسار بأن الرؤية السياسية التي ينطوي عليها هذا الحديث الغرائبي عن الشيطان وديونيسوس، وأكباش الفداء والأبالسة، أكثر جذرية من كثير مما يُعثر عليه في الخطابات الأكثر أرثوذكسية للتيار اليساري اليوم.
