لا بد لنا بادئ ذي بدء من أن تعرف الإنشاء، فنقول: إنه النهج الذي يعرض فيه صاحب القلم فكرة للناس، سواء أكان طالباً على مقاعد الدراسة، أم كاتباً ذائع الصيت، غير أن عرض الفكر لا يجوز أن يتم كيفما اتفق، ولكن يجب أن يعرض بلغة سليمة، جلبة واضحة، ذات عبارات سلسلة، ثلج إلى الجنان، قبل الآذان، وأن تجتنب الكلمات الجافة المنفرة، وتختار الكلمات البعيدة عن اللبس والغموض، حتى يدرك السامع غرض مخاطبه دون حاجة إلى إجهاد فكره.
ومن المفيد ألا يكون الإنشاء متسماً بالإسهاب الممل، ولا بالإيجاز المخل، لأن خير الكلام ما قل ودل. لكن ثمة ملاحظات ثلاثاً لو راعاها المنشئ لجاء إنشاؤه شيقاً، الملاحظة الأولى: لا تقبل كل ما يورده فكرك من المعاني، بل تخير خيرها. الملاحظة الثانية: كل كلمة يمكن حذفها فإبقاؤها خطأ. الملاحظة الثالثة: الإنشاء ابتكار فحاول أن تأتي بجديد فيما تكتب.
وليعلم أن كل موضوع يراط طرقه يستلزم الحديث عن أمور ثلاثة لا سبيل إلا إغفال أي منها، أو التقليل من شأنه، لأن الموضوع سيكون قاصراً مبتوراً، وبالتالي سيكون الاهتمام به بعيداً عن أذهان الكثيرين. وهذه الأمور الثلاثة هي: المقدمة: ولا يشترط فيها الإطالة، ثانيا: موضوع البحث وهنا ينبغي للواصف أن يفصل في الأمر، كأن يحدد موقع المحلج، مساحته، كمية القطن، إنتاجه اليومية الخ. ثالثاً: النتيجة: ويجب أن تتضمن تحديد المسؤولية فإذا توفرت الأمور الثلاثة المبينة آنفاً، في أي موضوع، كان أقرب إلى الحقيقية وأدلى إلى أن يوصف بالكامل.
هذه هي الخطوط العريضة الواجب على الطالب مراعاتها عند كتابة أي موضوع إنشائي، وهذه السمات نفسها هي التي راعاها "محمد راجي بن حسن كناس" في اختياره لموضوعات كتابه هذا والذي جمع بين طياته نصوصاً دونها عدد من أهم الأدباء والكتاب العرب والأجانب حيث قام وترجم ما كتبوا إلى العربية، من ثم اهتم بإثبات النص الأدبي تحت فقرة "موضوع"، وقبله اعتنى بتحديد عناصر كل موضوع وعنوانه.
وهكذا جاءت نصوص هذا الكتاب متنوعة غطت موضوعات الجهاد الفلاح، الولد البار، حفظ الأمامة، استقبال الربيع، رحيل صديق عزيز، اليد العليا، مذمة البخيل، الليل والنهار، حفظ الأسرار، آفة اللؤم، تقدير المعلم، عيد الشجرة، رسالة إلى صديق يحرس الحدود.
