كانت الكتابة تعاني من فوضى عارمة، ليس لها حدود، وكل امرئ كان يكتب كما يريد، دون مراعاة لأية قيود، ولا يتوخى الصحة فيما يكتب، وإن أثارت كتابته العجب. ولما كثر تفشي الأخطاء فيما تخطه أيدي الأدباء، أو تجود به قرائح الشعراء، عمد العالم العربي الجليل "الخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي" إلى وضع علم الإملاء. ولئن أردنا أن نعرف هذا العلم قلنا: "إنه علم رسم حروف الكلمات، وعلى وجه صحيح، من غير زيادة أو نقصان".
إن غاية علم الإملاء نقاء الكتابة من الأخطاء، والبعد بها عن الأهواء، ومن المعلوم أن شرف علم الإملاء، وفضله، منشؤه أن كل علم محتاج إليه، ولا غنى له عنه، وأما قوة بنيانه، فمرجعها إلى أنه قد أسس على قواعد راسخة من أصول الصرف، وأعمدة صلبة من دعائم النحو، حتى ينطلق اللسان، بأفصح بيان، فيأسر اللب، ويسترق الجنان.
والغاية من هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا هو الكشف عن أسرار علم الإملاء وتوضيح خلفية كل قاعدة إملائية والشواذ الوارد عليها، وحالات استعمالها كما ويعني الكتاب بتقديم العديد من النصوص النموذجية والتمارين الإملائية عليها وذلك يساعد الطالب المطالع لهذا الكتاب على ترسيخ معلوماته عن القاعدة الإملائية المشروحة وتوضيح مفهومها له وخلفيتها.
