نسمع كثيرا عن أن اليابان بلد صغير…من الناحية الجغرافية بالطبع، مما جعلنا نحمل صورة ذهنية تصور لنا ضيق مساحة هذا البلد، بل أن اليابانيون أنفسهم تجدهم يحملون تلك الصورة ذاتها تجاه طبيعة بلدهم الجغرافية. وقد يكون هذا صحيحا إذا ما قمنا بالمقارنة بين اليابان وبعض البلاد المعروفة بالمساحات الجغرافية الشاسعة مثل روسيا والولايات المتحدة الامريكية أو كندا والصين، لكن في المقابل إذا قارنا مساحة اليابان ببعض الدول الاوربية الشهيرة مثل فرنسا والمانيا أو ايطاليا وانجلترا سوف نكتشف أن الفارق في المساحة الجغرافية بسيط وليس بالقدر الكبير كالذي نحمله في مخيلتنا تجاه هذا البلد
