درس اللغة الإنجليزية بكلية الآداب - جامعة القاهرة، وتخرج فيها عام 1966، ثم حصل على دبلوم مسرح شكسبير بجامعة أكسفورد بإنجلترا عام 1969، ثم التحق بالجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة وحصل على درجة الماجستير في الاتصال الجماهيري عام 1975.
وكان محمد سلماوي قد عين مدرسًا للغة الإنجليزية وآدابها بكلية الآداب - جامعة القاهرة عام 1966، وفيي عام 1970 انتقل إلى جريدة الأهرام ليعمل بها محررًا للشئون الخارجية، وفي عام 1988 انتدب وكيلاً لوزارة الثقافة للعلاقات الخارجية. وفي عام 1991 عين مديرًا للتحرير بجريدة «الأهرام ويكلي» الصادرة باللغة الإنجليزية، ثم عين رئيسًا للتحرير بجريدة «الأهرام إبدو» الصادرة بالفرنسية. وإلى جانب ذلك عمل محمد سلماوي كاتبًا بجريدة «الأهرام» اليومية، ورئيسا لمجلس أمناء صحيفة«المصري اليوم»، اليومية المصرية المستقلة، ثم رئيسا لمجلس تحرير الصحيفة، في الثالث من يناير، من العام 2014

إن رواية "أجنحة الفراشة" للكاتب المصري محمد سلماوي هي من الروايات النادرة التي تنبأت بحدوث عاصفة الغضب المصرية التي تضرب البلاد الآن، فقد صدرت هذه الرواية قبل وقت قصير فقط من ثورة الشباب التي هزت أركان نظام الرئيس حسني مبارك.وترسم "أجنحة الفراشة" سيناريو للاحتجاجات مشابهة تماما لتلك التي حدثت بعد 25 يناير/كانون الثاني حيث توقع سلماوي أن تتفاقم هذه الاحتجاجات، بفضل الهواتف المحمولة وتجمعات فيسبوك، والإنترنت، وتحاول الحكومة حسب الرواية أن تكشف عن مؤامرة مدعومة من الخارج لقلب نظام الحكم.ووفق الرواية تعتقل الحكومة جميع أقطاب المعارضة، كما تعتقل كل المتعاملين معهم، ومن ضمنهم مجموعة الشباب وقود العصيان المدني، ويمضى سيناريو الرواية إلى تخيل امتناع معظم الموظفين للذهاب إلى أعمالهم، وكذلك يغلق التجار أبواب محالهم، وتضطر الحكومة للاستقالة، فتبرز هيئة وطنية تعد لانتخابات حرة على مستوى البلاد.
