إن امتداد الفتوحات الإسلامية في صدر الإسلام إلى رقعة جغرافية كبيرة تضمنت في إطارها عدة حضارات وثقافات عريقة، لم يجعل المسيرة الفكرية والحضارية للأمة الإسلامية إبان القرن الأول الهجري مجرد مسيرة بسيطة، بل جعلها مسيرة مركبة، تمثل ملتقى لتمازج وتداخل العديد من الأفكار والعناصر، وقد مثلت الدولة الأموية جماع هذا الملتقى، ففيها اجتمع أثر الجاهلية والإسلام والمسيحية، وامتزج التراث اليوناني والروماني بالفارسي، كما كان للديانات الهندية أثر كبير في التكوين الحضاري، ويؤرخ أحمد أمين في هذا الكتاب لهذه الفترة الحيوية من التاريخ الإسلامي، حيث يتعقب فيها الحياة العقلية منذ صدر الإسلام حتى نهاية الدولة الأموية.
