دراسة التاريخ القديم تختلف عن دراسة التاريخ الحديث في شيء واحد هو أن الوثائق ليست فقط المرجع الوحيد للمؤرخ بل كل ما يحيط بالإنسان من آثار. فنحن في دراسة التاريخ القديم يهمنا أن نتتبع الإنسان منذ عاش في الكهوف. ندرس ما خلفه لنا من آلات استعملها في الصيد والقنص كما ندرس عظام الحيوانات التي كان يعيش على لحمها وما نعثر عليه في هذه الكهوف من جماجم أو عظام هذا الإنسان. في هذه العصور الأولى التي سبقت عصور الوثائق المكتوبة نعتمد في دراسة تاريخها على ما نعثر عليه من أدوات الصوان ومن بقايا الأواني الفخارية. وفي هذه البقايا نجد معلومات وافية عن مدنيات هذه العصور الغابرة وتطورها وعن اتصال الشعوب بعضها بالبعض الآخر. ومن هنا نرى أن المؤرخ يجب أن يستعين ببعض العلوم لدراسة العصور القديمة. هذه العلوم هي علم الآثار وعلم الإنسان وعلم طبقات الأرض.
