تدور الرواية حول "سامح" الذى يكتشف بعد مرور 35 عاما من عمره أنه لم يعش حياته كما يريد، فلم ينعم بعلاقة حب حقيقية ظل يحلم بها ويتمناها، ولم يمارس العمل الذى يحبه بل مارس أعمالا يكرهها ولا يطيق رؤية زملائه ولا رؤسائه بها، كما أنه عانى من الفقر طيلة عمره الفائت الذى عاشه على هامش الحياة، مستسلما لليأس والكسل وفقدان العزيمة، فى عبثية استسهل بها أن يمارس حياته حسبما تشاء الظروف والأقدار، لا كما تشاء إرادته الحرة.
