كانت لحذيفة منزلة ومكانة رفيعة عند رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقد كان صاحب سر رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في المنافقين لم يعلمهم أحد الا حذيفة أعلمه بهم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وكان عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه إذا مات ميت لا يصلى عليه حتى يسأل عن حذيفة فإذا حضر حذيفة الصلاة صلى عليه عمر وإلا لم يصل خشية أن يكون من المنافقين فقد أمر الله نبيه صلى الله عليه وسلم في سورة التوبة آية 84 ألا يصلى على المنافقين قال تعالى (ولا تصل على أحد منهم أبدا ولا تقم على قبره إنهم كفروا بالله ورسوله وماتوا وهم فاسقين) صدق الله العظيم . وكان إيمان حذيفة وولاؤه لا يعترفان بالعجز ولا بالضعف ولا بالمستحيل ففي غزوة الخندق وبعد أن دب الفشل في صفوف كفار قريش وحلفائهم من اليهود أراد الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم أن يقف على آخر تطورات الموقف هناك في معسكر أعدائه وكان الليل مظلماً ورهيباً .. وكانت العواصف تزأر وتصطخب وكان الجوع المضني قد بلغ مبلغه بين أصحاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وقد وقع اختيار الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم على البطل حذيفة بن اليمان ليقوم بهذه المهمة البالغة العسر .
