يتناول المؤلف فيه العديد من الأحداث التاريخية الإسلامية في ضوء المنطق الاجتماعي الحديث وموقف قريش من الدين الجديد وتطورات المفاهيم الإجتماعية بعد ظهور الدين واثره على قريش وما تلاها من صراع على الخلافة الإسلامية بعد وفاة الرسول محمد بن عبد الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وأيضا مقتل عثمان بن عفان وما رافق مقتله من صراع ما بين علي بن أبي طالب ومعاوية بن أبي سفيان وخلاف قائم بين السنة والشيعة إلى يومنا هذا حول هذا الأمر، وقد سلط المؤلف الضوء على دور رجال الدين الوعاظ والصراع النفسي وازدواجية شخصيتهم ودروهم في إصلاح المجتمع وكذلك العكس حيث يتناول دورهم في إفساد المجتمع من ناحية تغليب مصلحة السلطة على الشعب خصوصًا بتركيزه علي عهد الصحابة، يبدأ الوردي في مناقشة شخصية رجل الدين الواعظ قريب الصلة من بلاط السلطة حيث تناولهم منذ بداية قيام الدولة الإسلامية في المدينة المنورة ثم تعمق في دورهم فترة الحرب الأهلية بين علي ومعاوية وما كان من إفرازاتها كلمحة خاطفة حيث كان تركيزه أكثر الأمر في الدور التأسيسي أي القرن الأول. وكذلك يتناول العديد من الموضوعات والمحاور الأخرى في هذا البحث الكبير
