يعدّ الفعل عنصراً أساسياً في بناء الجملة العربية بوصفه حدثاً يجري في أزمنة مختلفة، وهو طرف مهم في العلاقة الإسنادية، فهو المسند في أي جملة فعلية ولا غنًى له عن المسند إليه؛ لتكتمل هذه العلاقة.
ويعرض الكتاب مواضيع عدة تتناول دلالة الفعل، منها: الزمن الصرفي والزمن النحوي، والزيادة والتجريد، والنقص والتمام، واللزوم والتعدي، والجمود والتصرف، والإظهار والإضمار، والإعراب والبناء.
