هل كان القتل بهذه السهولة؟ لقد توقف للحظة واحدة ونظر خلفه: ليرى الشارع الطويل مضاء ببضعة فوانيس و رأى جثة أنطوني الذي لم يكن يعرف اسم عائلته ملقيًا على الأرض ورأى ذلك بدقة ووضوح. و تعجب على الفور. لقد كان قادرًا على إدراك ملامح وجهه ، ذلك الوجه النحيف الذي يعاني من الألم مع وضع الجسم ، وهو الوضع الطبيعي. وراه هناك على منحدر حاد ورأسه منحني على كتف واحد على الجدار و كانت أطراف القدمين منتصبة و تبدو في الضوء الضعيف للمصابيح البعيدة و كان كما لو كان الجسم قد اتكأ طواعية و جميع الأجزاء الأخرى كانت حقًا لرجل ميت او قتيل. لذا فقد اختار أقصر الطرق مباشرة. وتجنب الممرات لقد كان يهرب و يجرى بسرعة وكأن الحراس يتابعونه.و كاد أن يلقي بامرأة على الأرض و هو يجرى ولكنه مضى متجاهلًا صرخات اللعنة التي كانت تتلفظ بها في وجهه.
