إن مباحث هذا الكتاب تقع في إطار دراسة في مصادر التراث العربي، وهي إذ تضع في طموحها كشف جوانب تغني المطبوع من المصادر التي درستها فإنها تحاول أن تقول أن مصادر تراثنا العربي ما تزال بحاجة إلى أكثر من عودة ليكتمل جناها وليستوفي الدارسون ثمارها المتجددة العطاء.
ولقد تصدت المجموعة الولى من هذه المباحث لدراسة مصادر عدد من الكتب التراثية وطريقة أصحابها من العلماء في جمع مادتها وتوثيقها وليس بخاف أن لمثل هذه الدراسات إضاءة لطبيعة الجهد وترسيخاً لملامح منهج التأليف العربي التراثي وتأصيلاً لمنطلقات معاصرة في هذا الميدان.
أما المجموعة الثانية، فقد ضمت عدداً من الدراسات التحقيقية لدواوين وكتب تراثية في ضوء ما كشفت عنه يد الأيام من موادها وصححته من أوهامها وكان طموح هذه الدراسات تقديم نموذج علمي للدراسة التحقيقية على صعيد الممارسة والتطبيق؛ أما المجموعة الأخيرة من المباحث فقد اتجهت إلى دراسة مواد مختلفة منها ما يقع في إطار التراث وحده، ومنها ما يقع في إطار التواصل بين التراث والنتاج المعاصر.
ولقد توزع عدد من بحوث هذا الكتاب على مجلات علمية متفرقة وكان بعضها الآخر مادة محاضرات علمية في كلية الآداب بجامعة بغداد، ولم يكن ثمة سبيل لجمع هذا الشتات إلا هذا الكتاب.
