تعتبر غادة السمان من أغرز الأدباء إنتاجاً وأكثرهم تنوعاً في الكتابة. فلقد مارست كتابة القصة القصيرة والرواية، والشعر المنثور، والمقالة الصحفية بشتى مواضيعها ومن بين هذا الإنتاج الغزير، تبرز الرواية عند غادة السمان في عملها الروائيين "بيروت 75" و"كوابيس بيروت" بروزاً واضحاً، لأسباب عدّة، أولها جدّة المحاولة. فقد مارست غادة السمان طويلاً القصة القصيرة والمقال الصحفي، وبالتحديد منذ سنة 1962، إلا أنها لم تبدأ ممارسة كتابة الرواية إلا في سنة 1962.
وفي هذا الكتاب يعرض الناقد لدراسات نقدية عدة جاءت حول إنتاج غادة السمان استعرض من خلالها آراء مختلفة بغاية إظهار أن هذه الدراسات لم تقل كل شيء عن آثار غادة السمان أو أنها حاولت نقدها بالاعتماد على مواقف قبلية.
هذا بالإضافة إلى أن جميعها باستثناء أحدها قد أهملت ناحية الشكل الفني، خاصة وأن بعض الأحكام السريعة المتعلقة متضاربة، فهل تعتبر "بيروت 75" رواية أم مجموعة من القصص القصيرة، وهل "كوابيس بيروت" هي رواية في ثوب جديد، أم هي لا تعدو أن تكون مجرد يوميات بسيطة.
وهنا، كما يعتقد الناقد، تكمن أهمية هذه الدراسة النقدية التي يتناولها، وهنا أيضاً يمكن سبب اختياره لهذا الموضوع بالذات. لذا فقد بحث في علاقة الرواية بالواقع باعتبارها منطلق هذه الدراسة وركيزتها الأساسية. ففيم تتمثل هذه العلاقة، وكيف تتجلى في الأثر الأدبي؟
