إذا أراد مؤرخ أن يكتب في تاريخ أمتنـا العظيمـة، أو أراد كاتبُ السير أن يطلعنا على سير أسلافنا الصالحين؛ فإنه لا بد وأن يذكر في طيات كتابه الخيولَ وفرسانَها، كيف لا؟! وعلى ظهورها فُتحت البلاد، وحُرّرت العباد، وعلى صهواتها رفعـت رايات الحـق في المعارك والفتوحات، وهي التي حملت العلمـاء إلى أصقـاع الدنيا؛ لينشروا العلم والحضارة والآداب.
هذا وقد أُلِّفت كتبٌ كثيرة في الخيل وفضلِها، وأسمائها، وأنسابها، وفرسانها، وما فيها من أشعار وأمثال وغيرِ ذلك. ومن أجلِّ هذه الكتب وأفضلها شمولاً كتاب: ’فضل الخيل‘ ـ الذي هو بين أيدينا ـ للإمام العلامة الحافظ الدمياطي.
فقد بدأ المؤلف كتابَهُ ببيانِ فضـلِ الخيل المُتَّخـذة في سبيل الله، ثم بيانِ التماسِ نسلها ونمائها، والنهي عن قطعها، ثم بيَّن ما جاء في الأمر بارتِباطها، وما يُستحب من ألوانها وشياتها، وأوضح ما جاء في كراهة شُؤْمها وشكلها، وما يحلُّ ويحرم من سباقهـا، وأَتبع ذلك ببيان ما يُقسم لصاحبها من الغنائم والسهام.
ثم ختم الكتاب بما جاء في سقوط الزكـاة في الخيل، فجاء الكتاب كاملاً تامًّا في أبوابه وفصوله.
