لقد كتب كلام كثير حول الشاعر المصري أحمد فؤاد نجم وأثارت كتاباته النقاش والجدل، لكن معظم ما قيل عنه انقسم في أغلب الأحيان بين التهجم العنيف وبين التمجيد والتعظيم نتيجة لانتماءاته ومواقفه السياسية ولم يتجاوز في معظم الأوقات المقالات السريعة واللقاءات الصحفية. لكن شاعراً "ملأ الدنيا وشغل الناس" في فترة ما. ولقيت قصائده شتى أنواع التضييق والأذى، وسجن صاحبها بسببها ما يقارب العقدين حري بدراسة تتجنب التهجم أو التعظيم المسبقين، وتنفذ إلى عوالمه الشعرية من خلال النصوص التي كتبها لا غير، لتحدد أهم المضامين التي حوتها وتسطر المراحل الشعرية التي مر بها وانتهى إليها. وقد حددت الدراسة التي ضمها هذا الكتاب "أحمد فؤاد نجم من الثورة إلى الخيبة" حددت هذه الدراسة لنفسها هذه الوجهة وتناولت نصوص الشاعر بالتحليل والمقارنة، وحاولت استقراءها لتخرج بنتائج منها لا مما قيل عنها وحولها.
