بعد سلسلة من المؤلفات في التصوف عامة، وفي الطريقة الصوفية خاصة، كان لابد من تخصيص سفر للصوفيين، منذ عرفت هذه الحركة في العالم الإسلامي وحتى عصرنا الحاضر، والسفر الذي بين يدينا يأتي لسد هذه الثغرة حيث جاء جامعاً تراجم رجالات الصوفية الذين دونوا المصنفات، ودبجوا المؤلفات، وخلفوا الآثار الأدبية من نظم ونثر، حيث نهج منهجاً علمياً، موضوعياًن يبتغي الدقة، والأمانة العلمية، فدون المعلومات عن الصوفي بكل تجرد ونزاهة، فذكر اسم المترجم له ونسبه وشهرته وزمان ولادته ووفاته، ومكانهما، وتحدث عن نشأتهم وطلبهم للعلم وأشهر الذين أخذوا عنهم، والمناصب التي تولوها مثل القضاء والفتيا والتدريس ومشيخة الزوايا ونقابة الأشراف. وبينت أهم ما اشتهرت به هذه الشخصية في ميادين الفقه والحديث والتفسير والعلوم والآداب والشعر، وفي بعض الشخصيات تم ذكر الطريقة الصوفية التي ينتمي إليها صاحب الترجمة، كما تم ذكر أشعار من اشتهر منهم بكتابة الشعر.
